Muriel Lake Trip, August 2000
This was an extremely easy 13 mile, 3 Day Trip, Hiking out of North Lake up and over Piute Pass via the Piute Pass Trail to Muriel Lake with a day hike to the upper Goethe Lake and Back. This was my first non-solo trip to the High Sierras and the only one with my Mother so it has a special meaning—not to mention it’s one of the prettiest set of Lakes that I can recall in all of my years of Hiking in the High Sierras. The trip was easy, starting out hiking at 9,000ft and having an easy and short climb to Piute Pass and then Muriel Lake, although I had to take it easy on my mother only making it to Loch Leven Lake for the first night. This was really the only hard part having to carry my pack and my mother’s pack up 300ft section of rock stair-like steps because my mother had just had a few heart surgeries. I will say that because of this trip I did eventually start making it a practice to carry a gun on my thigh when-ever applicable. There was this Hiker who kind of when ballistic on my mother and I about our proximity to his campsite. That hasn’t happened since nor has anyone tried to educate me on hiking ethics. As a matter of fact, most people tend to avoid me when I’ve got my gun strapped to my thigh. I don’t know what this guy was thinking. Polite and Friendly should be anyone’s policy up here, because there’s no 911 and you don’t know what the other guy is packing and/or is capable of when you start giving them lectures on hiking ethics or just flat out become a jerk to someone despite their knowledge.
